Review of the Catalina 25 by mike hughes

Year built 1983
Location of boat flagstaff,az
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1996
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? absolutely,it's given me and my family many enjoyable days on the water. I feel that catalina does a good job with design and has worked most of the
Gear that's been added vhf radio, Autohelm 1000 autopilot, cdi roller furling w/ 150% genoa, full electronics depthfindder, knot meter, knot log
Structural or complex improvements none, but need to modify starboard settee to improve sleepability
The boat's best features reasonable well priced boat with good lines that has most bugs worked out, a very customizable boat for the size
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. limited bunk size if you a large size 6' person
Sailing characterisitcs sails well on most points of sail, not the fastest boat on the water but has been very seaworthy. I sail this boat regularly in the Sea of Cortez and one experiences winds of 0-35 knots , like many small boats I find you must reef and/or furl early if the winds are on the increase.
Motoring characterisitcs I have a transome mounted 8HP evenrude 2stroke OB, and unless the waves are close and over 3' the boat does great. On large waves the prop may cavitate as it comes out of the water. But most of the time when its conditions like this you are sailing anyway
Liveability Not a true liveaboard in the classic sense, but is o.k. for trips up to aweek or so for 2-3 people
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments Good all around boat, would buy another in a heartbeat!
