Review of the Catalina 22 by Rai Behnert

Year built 1976
Location of boat Juneau, Alaska
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength Press here and selec
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1999
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. I sold my first C-22 in 1993. I just bought my second C-22 after missing our first boat for the intervening time.
Gear that's been added Not yet, but my
Structural or complex improvements No.
The boat's best features The swing keel and rudder options. They allow me to get cope better with the vagaries of the extreme tides we experience in SE Alaska waters. I also like how portable (trailering-wise) the boat is because of these features.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The cabin sliding hatch could be sturdier. Both my boats (which I bought used) have/had hatches that are/were slightly cracked.
Sailing characterisitcs All things considered, my first C-22 was a pretty fast and fun boat to sail. I never entered her in any races, but the
Motoring characterisitcs Just an 8 horse kicker in back. Nothing to describe, really.
Liveability Great for its size. I really like the stowability of the water tank/cooler/stove mount/drawer unit (is there a name for this unit?). Also the table and the side shelves.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any N/A
