Review of the Catalina 320 by Rick Evans

Year built 2000
Location of boat Western LI Sound
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Racing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2007
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Absolutely it is probably the best mix of speed and cruising you could find.
Gear that's been added New Sails. It had everything else
Structural or complex improvements No need
The boat's best features Speed and maintenance
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The Jabsco head is problematic for me, seems to break often. Other than some other Jabsco items on the boat I have been problem free.
Sailing characterisitcs A little slow in light air but what Catalina isn't? Im 10 to 15knots of wind she is absolutely a rocket ship for a catalina cruiser. After 18knots put a reef in because with full sail and a 155% she becomes over powered.
Motoring characterisitcs fine. I mostly sail I only motor when I have to. The motor is quite noisy but functions perfectly.
Liveability I wouldnt live on it for more than a weekend
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments Just an absolutely fabulous boat for an unbelievable price. I would recommend it immensely. Especially if you are looking to club race and do some weekend cruises you cant go wrong. She can be sailed beyond her rating and for my wife and 2 small kids she has plenty of room.
