Review of the Catalina Capri-22 by Jim Meyer

Year built 1986
Location of boat Marblehead, Ohio
The boat is sailed on The Great Lakes
How the boat is used Racing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1996
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes
Gear that's been added Assymetric spinniker, 150 genoa and roller furling, upgraded rigging.
Structural or complex improvements No, boat was extremely sound.
The boat's best features Exceptional performance. Large comfortable cockpit. Quality construction and hardware.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Berth storage is nuisance. Given up trying to step our mast. Now a marina function. No mast steaming/anchor light. Like building a car without tail lights.
Sailing characterisitcs Goes to weather better than any 22-27 ft boat in our fleet. Very responsive-a 22 ft Laser. Very tender, must reef before everyone else, always a challenge to balance heel with boat speed. Racing to our rating keeps us alert and paying attention.
Motoring characterisitcs Very efficient hull for 4hp engine. Struggles in a sea. 37lbs on the transom is ideal, however.
Liveability Bought the boat for daysailing which it does with alacrity. For overnight, take a hotel guide. Unless one happens to be a 5'2" hermit.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Have not.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Great story that space does not allow. Consignment boat through a dealer who had some financial fun at the expense of the seller.
Other comments Wonderful boat. No desire to move "up". Have sailed and raced many; Capri 22 is a serious boat that couldn't be more fun.
