Review of the Catalina 22 by Tom

Year built 1988
Location of boat New Jersey Shore
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2000
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? yes!! Bigger is not always better
Gear that's been added depth finder, compass, vhf; mast head fly,,
Structural or complex improvements no
The boat's best features very easy to single hand, especially with the roller furling and self tailing jib sheets
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The cooler step into the cabin is set up so the top can not stay up by itself.
Sailing characterisitcs The boat sails well (wing keel)when it gets to 15 knots it starts to become an effort under full sail power.
Motoring characterisitcs Boat motors very good under all condition tested (6 horse power) I never needed to use full power but it nice to know ther is extra if need be.
Liveability I enjoy taking naps on the boat but don't see this boat as a boat I would take a cruise on. Did not buy the boat with that in mind
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) have not
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any private
Other comments It is a great boat for the seasoned sailor who just wants to sail shore line to shore line and not have to worry about sea tow!! Easy to maintain during the sailing season and in the spring when your getting ready for another season. While other people in the yard are up and down ladders buffing there boat your on firm ground, every thing can be done at eye level or below. The cockpit is very roomy for a boat of 22 feet. If day sailing is what you do a majority of the time this is a boat you should really consider. It is a very economical boat to get into and maintain.
