Review of the Catalina 22 by Ted

Year built 1982
Location of boat Cape Cod
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 16-22 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1997
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, this has been a great boat. It is a well designed boat that seems to do everything fairly well. Upkeep is easy because you can still buy all the parts.
Gear that's been added Single-handed rigging, boom vang, symetrical backstay.
Structural or complex improvements Epoxy/glass the keel.
The boat's best features The cabin layout seems to be the best of any boat of its size range.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Nothing, really.
Sailing characterisitcs in 25 mph of wind or more, reef the main and it sails fast and stable. In light air use the Genoa.
Motoring characterisitcs I like to take the boat in close to shore and anchor. You can get it into about 20" of water.
Liveability The cabin is great for two people, tight for four people. If you can enclose the cockpit area, then there is planty of sheltered room.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) No, I have only dealt with Catalina Direct (independent retailer of parts)
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any Bought directly from the previous owner.
Other comments After owning the boat for 7 years, I can appreciate why the Catalina 22 has sold over 15,000 boats. This is a REALLY good boat.
