Review of the Catalina 22 by Bob Walker

Year built 1985
Location of boat Invermere B.C. Canada
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Multi-week coastal cruising
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? without a doubt - both my wife and I agree it is the best purchase we ever made.
Gear that's been added two burner propane stove - 13 lb anchor with 25 feet chain and 300 feet rode - inflatable dingy - single line reefing on the main - made a wooden stand for helping with mast raising and lowering.
Structural or complex improvements last year - keel spacers - new keel locking bolt and nut assembly - this winter I will refurbish the keel - replace keel hinge assemble - and replace winch cable and turning ball ( purchased through Catalin Direct) - new bottom paint -
The boat's best features easy towing from out lake in the Rocky Mountains to the Straight of Georgia for out monthly year vacation - furrel reefing of the genoa - pop top with canvas - good sized double berth with the table down - lots of storage
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. It all works great
Sailing characterisitcs very forgiving - easy and fun to sail - only one knock down which was my fault
Motoring characterisitcs currently have a older 9.9 merc that is being replaced next spring with somthing perhaps a bit smaller - 7 or 8 hp and perhaps a 4 stroke depending on wieght. The boat cruises nicely under power at about 10 knots.
Liveability My wife and I have spent one 23 day stint and last year a 24 day trip living aboard the entire time - we ensure we hit a marina at least once every fourth day. All cooking is done in the cockpit. The dinett table remains down at all times as this is our berth. Our days are spent sailing to various marine parks and at night we are at anchor or at a marina. My wife has said that these trips have been the best vacations of her life and I must agree.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) never have
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought this boat through a broker - to this day have never received a bill of sale - when the boat was viewed there was a wisker pole - this was not with the boat upon delivery - If I ever buy another boat I will not deal through a broker.
Other comments I shopped onling and whenever possible at marinas looking for the "right" boat - I am sure we get more sailing time and more use out of our Catalina 22 than the majority of the 30 foot and over status investments growing weeds at the dock. By making such a practical purchase not only is upkeep a minor cost - we also are free to take extended trips once a year because of the lack of financial required needed for a larger boats moorage, maintenance and purchase. Check it out - the Catalina 22 is a scaled down version of the 30, 34, 36 etc. and smaller is better in so many ways.
