Review of the Catalina 22 by Kris Underwood

Year built 1983
Location of boat Lake Wawasee Syracuse, Indiana
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2003
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes I would. Without a doubt. This is my first sailboat purchase and I do not regret it in any way.
Gear that's been added Added a few options to the cabin. I rigged something to allow the small bed where the table lays down to make a nearly queen size bed with an air mattress.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features It is a great sailboat to have for a small family of 3 or 4. Any family larger would need a larger boat. It is the perfect size for us to head up for weekends. We spend the entire weekend on the boat. Day and night. It is a great boat for that for a small family. It is also very easy to learn how to sail. I have had no lessons and taught myself very easily how to sail with this boat.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. I have had very little problems with this boat. Nothing that is not out of the ordinary for a 20 year old boat. Although the boat is 20 years old, it resembles a 5 year old boat in the shape that it is in.
Sailing characterisitcs Great boat to learn to sail on. Easy to control. The boat can be rigged to allow just one person to sail it alone.
Motoring characterisitcs
Liveability It is a great boat to live on for the weekend. We are a family of 3 and it is the perfect size for us. I spend entire weeks on the boat without my family and it is perfect. The pop top is a blessing, allowing much more head room. We live on it comfortably on the weekends. I would have to say that if you have a family of lets say 4 or 5 that you may want to consider a 25 foot boat instead to more living space.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Very good!
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought her from a gentleman who took excellent care of her. He treated the boat like it was a part of his family.
Other comments Great boat! If you are thinking about buying a Catalina 22...I would have to say that you just can't go wrong with one.
