Review of the Catalina 22 by Dave C.

Year built 1975
Location of boat S E Connecticut
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 1998
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? yes, but I will not sell it til the family out grows it.
Gear that's been added Stem fitting support, Eye Bolt, new CB winch/cable, mast step, chain plates (1/2") new stays, turnbuckles, new Lewmar #7 winches and #6 for top of cabin, control lines to cockpit, new halyards, Roller furling system, boom kicker and vang. new locking hasps, new porti-potti, new cushions, new o.b. motor bracket FM Stereo/CD player.
Structural or complex improvements Re-faired CB and added new pin/bushing replacement, spacer.
The boat's best features trailerability, Boat offers a lot for it size. The ability to lower and raise the cb is a nice feature for sailing in shallows. Can go where most sail boats can not. Points well, because you can get the cb down 5'. It is very forgiving and stable boat.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Old style alum. motor bracket. The bolts can break and mount has too much play (sloppy). CB does need to be maintained and checked, but the trade off is worth it. Replace old cb winch, the new one is much better. the newer >1986 boats have a nicer hatch design and a nice little locker for the anchor on the fore deck.
Sailing characterisitcs The boat is pleasure to sail. Needs 150 Genoa to get boat moving in less than 10 kts wind. The boat is stable once cb is fully deployed. Turns on a dime. Can be sailed single handed. Nice large cockpit is nice feature, this is where you spend a lot of your time.
Motoring characterisitcs A 4-6 hp will push the boat to its boat speed very nicely. It can take a 7.5 to 9.9 for sailing areas with stronger current. I use 6 hp mercury with a power prop and it pushed the boat very nice.
Liveability Does not offer a lot of head room as say the C25, but you can sleep on boat to over nite or weekend. There is a lot of room to stuff things for its size.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) I have never dealt with company, but I really admire this company. They are still around and mfg the C22. Also show support the C22 greatly.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any
Other comments The C22 has nice support group nationally. It is still a very popular boat today and is a very nice design/sail plan. You will not be sorry owning this boat. Many new upgrades that bring the boat up to date.
