Review of the Catalina 22 by Rick Juneau

Year built 1973
Location of boat New Orleans, La.
The boat is sailed on Lakes
How the boat is used Day sailing
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, The boat is very good for lake sailing. Also a very depenable and trustworthy craft.
Gear that's been added Yes, I have added anchor, steamer, and deck lights. Also a horn, wind vane, cowl over gas locker, and cargo nets.
Structural or complex improvements No
The boat's best features The boat is easy to sail single handed, and is very forgiving.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. So far,(with normal upkeep) I have been very fortunate not to have any real problems.
Sailing characterisitcs The boat sails well on the lake with 5 to 15 knot winds. Although the feel is tender from 0 to 20 degrees of heel, it seems to "toughen up" when reaching the 25 to 30 degree mark. I've had no problems pointing up because when I'm close hauled, I'M CLOSE HAULED! Find the "sweet spot" on my 100% jib and I have the wind in my face. The boat has a swing keel ballast of 515 pounds, but I think it could use a little more to sit heavier in the water.
Motoring characterisitcs The boat has a 6 HP two stroke Yamaha and performs well in all conditions. The 6 HP allows me to reach hull speed and uses very little fuel motering in and out of the harbor.
Liveability The cabin is very roomy for the size of the boat. There is lots of room for supplies and gear to be stowed or in reach. The cargo nets I have added increase the in reach avalability of gear. Best conditions are when it's girlfriend and myself, leaving lots of room to eat, drink, and be merry. Though having two couples on board still leaves room for everyone to be comfortable, and supplies and gear are still stowed or in reach. I do not live aboard the boat, but being at a slip in the harbor makes it possable. Living aboard would clutter up the cabin with creature comforts that are not on board now. Using the boat as a weekend (or those sickdays during the week);) sailer is a more efficient use of cabin and storage.
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) The only dealings with Catalina was to order the owners manual for the boat. It was a smooth transaction with the item in stock.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought the boat from a private owner that used the boat for personal lessons to move up to a bigger boat. When he moved up, I moved in.
Other comments The boat I own is a 1973 Catalina swing keel, hull #2113. It is in great shape and the additions I have made makes the boat that much better. Compliments abound around the harbor about the great shape it is in for the year of the boat. There are a few other Cat 22's at the harbor, but with a little TLC mine seems to stand out more.
