Review of the Catalina 34 by Zachary Kastl

Year built 1986
Location of boat Niceville, FL
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 5-6
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2001
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Without a doubt.
Gear that's been added The boat was very well equipped when purchased. I have upgraded the stereo, but that's about it.
Structural or complex improvements None
The boat's best features We have a family of seven, and were able to take the boat out for 10 days of coastal cruising. We were very comfortable.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. Engine exhaust. The design of the exhaust header to muffler is completely bogus. There is no room to absorb vibration in the system.
Sailing characterisitcs She sails well in a breeze. We had it out racing this weekend in 20-25 kts. and she was charging with a 135 and a full main. The 3 blade prop takes it's toll in the light stuff.
Motoring characterisitcs She motors well in all conditions. There is a pronounced "prop-walk" to port in reverse, but it can be managed.
Liveability Fantastic
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) n/a
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any none
Other comments It is a great value.
