Review of the Catalina Capri-22 by Kris

Year built 1997
Location of boat Tampa Bay
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew solo
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2004
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes, it sails well and looks good.
Gear that's been added I am going to add a autopilot since I sail alone. I could use the extra hand, mainly when the wind picks up. I added v h f and g p s. G p s is more of a fun thing to have but gives you idea of how fast your going, and will help me find a channel in the dark or bad weather. I mounted both of them in the companion way so I can see and reach them a little easier when underway.
Structural or complex improvements I have two supports holding the deck up under the mast. It is sagged a little, not much it is not getting any worse. I have noticed the new boats have a single support right under the mast.
The boat's best features The company has been in business a long time, and the boats have a good following loyal owners. I like the two cockpit drains in the stern. Two of them and no threw hulls. It has a fixed keel and no pop top. The berths are actually large and comfortalble. I am 5'10" and can stretch out in the v-berth and side berths. I use the side berths because it is much easier to get in and out of. The best feature is how it sails.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. The reefing system on the main is using cam cleats, and is useless. The lines pulled right threw them. I will be adding real cleats, somehting I can trust in a blow. The cushion on the port side needs to be split so you can get into the compartment under the seat.
Sailing characterisitcs Very nice sailing boat and fast for its size.
Motoring characterisitcs I have a Yamaha 6 and weighs 60 pounds. Would not want an engine that weighs anymore than that. Could get by with smaller engine. I like the 6 when the wind and chop pick up and your in a narrow channel or going threw a bridge or inlet. She pounds a little bit in chop.
Liveability I spend weekends on her. Its a small boat but very comfortable for its size. Much better than a tent. It keeps you dry and you can stretch out.
