Love those stern perch seats

posted 10-07-2008 by Rick Dober

Probably one of the first Add-ons and most used things I did to my boat was to purchase a pair of Stern Perch Seats. I really love them. They give a great view of the sail trim and you can even steer while on them. Not to mention the two extra beverage holders built in.

But one big draw back to their installation on my catalina 30, is that the vertical support leg rests on top of the aft lazerette, requiring that you rotate the two stern seats up out of the way before you can open the aft lazerette.

Original perch seats

In this picture you can see the support rests on the lazerette cover. They also got in the way of the seat cushions.

My solution was to angle the support legs. I purchased two 60 degree fittings for the supports. Fortunately the holes lined up perfectly with the original 90 degree tube fittings, so there was no need to drill more holes in the perch seats.

I manufactured two blocks made of starboard to accept the ends of the tubes and provide a means of distributing the load from the tubes to the fiberglass. These blocks were drilled to accept the ends of the tubes, and bolted to the fiberglass. I played with the exact locations to ensure there was still plenty of room to get mooring lines around the cleats.

Solution

In this picture you can see that the aft lazerette cover is free. It can be quickly opened with out having to reposition the stern seats.
