Inexpensive Refrigerator

posted 10-07-2008 by Rick Dober

Im sure Catalina meant well when they installed these tube to hold charts, but I always found the charts on the floor when on starboard tack.

Prior Configuration

Removing the tube assembly is easy. There are 4 screws that secure the top of the assembly through the bottom of the nav table and several that hold it to the bulkhead.

The refrigerator I purchased was roughly 18 inches tall. That meant I needed to construct a shelf support for it 5 1/4 inches high. This support has a teak front and side pieces and a 3/8 piece of birch plywood screwed in place. The plywood base is definately not square. The front edge is 18 3/4 inches, the forward edge is 14 3/4, the starboard (back) edge is 19 and the aft edge is 13 1/4. I used a piece of cardboard to approximate the size needed. The plywood top is screwed into the base to allow installation of the base to the fiberglass liner.

This picture shows the base secured to the liner with a couple of stainless brackets. A support rail is screwed to the bulkhead and to the front piece to support the plywood shelf.

Base mounting

Since I had several electrical devices I needed to use a multiple outlet extention cord. I wanted the cord secure and out of the way but still accessible. So I built a cantilevered support to hold it.

This cord holds the various transformers I use to charge the hand held radio and power the air filter. It will also drive the refrigerator.

The unit I selected fit very nicely into the space under the Nav table. The door protrudes into the aisle way only an inch or so. The refrigerator is secured in place by several sheet metal screws through the bottom of the nav table and a few more through the bulkhead.

This picture shows the holes that used to support the map tube assembly but now support the refrigerator.

Now to enjoy the fruits of my labor.
