Resurection of a Cat 27

posted 10-07-2008 by Tim Barnby

Here she is as she sat the day we first saw her. As you can see, the boat had been sitting for 7 years.

Starboard BEFORE

This boat is really in need of some TLC. The Gel Coat, at this point, was very chalky! Im not sure if it will be able to be repaired. Im budgeting about $600.00 for paint, just in case my wet sanding project fails.

Port BEFORE

I looked and looked for the holding tank. Finally I realized that the law, requiring hgolding tanks, did not take come into play until 75. Can you imagine sailing along and hitting a big floater? Thats just WRONG!

HA! No holding tanks in 74 YUCK!

The rudder had been replaced the year before she was put to rest.

New Rudder

The PO of this boat really loved her. He moved her to KS from FL 7 years ago and never sailed her again. My first inspection showed many upgrades and retrofits.

Deck and Traveler

This boat was really wet and nasty inside. You can see the dirt, mold, and mung everywhwere you look.

Starboard Quarrter Berth

Wow! What a mess this was to clean out. My bilge pump cleared the water in a matter of minutes, but then the task of cleaning the black, gross slimy mung (Im not sure what it was) started. I will have limited time in the boat yard once I take her home, so I started cleanup where she sits.

Bilge

Of course, every boat comes with her little treasures. Here is one of the yacht lamps that came with her. A few rounds with brass cleaner should take care of this.

Yacht Lamp

This boat originally came with an Atomic 4. The PO installed this yachttwin with remote controls. Its been sitting for 7 years, but its not seized, so its likely repairable. Well see in a couple weeks.

O/B

Its always nice to have some of the nice appointments. Even though shes been neglected for awhile, the barometer still works. Id guess once I put a battery in the clock, it will work as well. Another Yacht Lamp and gimble are also pictured. You can also see that the PO, who is a great wood worker, rebuilt the bulkheads and table with a nice white laminate coating. Very nice.

More goodies

This traveler is very nice. Its going to need new lines, but everything else seems to be in very good condition.

Another goodie!

At least the water never got to the V Berth height. Every piece of trim was removed from this boat and put into a nice climate controled storage unit. All of the cushions, trim, and accessories are in excellent condition.

V Berth

Nice and slimy. But the potential is there. And the boat was pretty much a give-away, so why not?
