New Exhaust Elbow

I thought that it might be useful for someone to see what is under that white asbestos wrap when their elbow is being replaced. Mine broke on the way to my slip this spring after put-in so I took a few pictures to share. Lots of good information in the archive, just no photos...so here you go. I have a 1980 Catalina 27 with a Universal 5411 diesel. The elbow was always snug as could be when Id give her a good shake, so I never thought about replacing it until my cabin was full of smoke. The first pic is what it looked liked unwrapped.

Took the old rusted elbow to my local hardware and he made me a new one for $39. Took him about half an hour and it is exactly the same dimensions as the old one. I had a welder tack on the stabilizer bar for no cost. Said he didnt charge for such a small job...Nice guy. The ony carry over pieces were the stablizer bar and the engine mount in the following picture.

Since it was hard for me to come up with some new asbestos wrapping material (just kidding) I thought Id use this new stuff. I also bought this at the autosupply store and it was the most expensive stuff of the project ($49!!). Used on high performance exhausts to boost HP. I plunked down the new elbow on the counter of the store and the two guys working looked at it and asked What the hell kind a car does that go to? Easy to put on with a couple of stainless pipe clamps. Only used half the roll so I guess I can always wrap the exhaust headers of my minivan to boost the horsepower!

Here is what I called the engine mount. Not sure what the true name for this is
