Chartplotter - Raymarine A70

posted 02-10-2010 by Richard Ad

My C-350 did not have a chartplotter nor a NavPod. This year (2009) I purchased a Raymarine A70 at the Annapolis Sailboat show from Defender. It comes with a mount that allows you to swivel from left to right and tilt up or down, and remove the chartplotter when not in use. I then needed to come up with a mount which I found an Edson powder coated cast aluminum on EBay that mounts to both posts on the pedestal. The Edson backet was a risk buy because the distance between the pedestal tubes need to match the brackets centerlines. It wasnt perfect but it mounted and looks really good. I then had an experienced marine electrician install the unit. He ran the wires from my electrical panel which had a switch labeled Chartplotter, through the aft cabin, up the binical, through the tube to my Edson mount and volia! I now have a chartplotter. The A70 has a 6 screen (big enough), picks up the sattalites really quickly, had a split screen for chart and data with options for 3D and other graphics if you buy the extra Nav card. Right now I love this unit. Its easy to use and has just enough bells and whistles.
