Battery Shelf for C-36

posted 10-07-2008 by Rod Collins

This shelf will fit in the forward gaming seat of a C-36 and will fit up to a group 31 battery. I first made a cardboard template and then cut the wood to fit. Next I will coat it with West Systems epoxy and glass it into place in the seat locker. By adding this shelf it allows me to utilize my aft seat for two 6V golf cart batteries and the forward seat for my starting battery.

This picture shows the angle of the hull that had to be matched. I first made sure my boat was level on the hard before I made my measurements on the shelf. I used a small 8 inch level that fit in the locker to determine fit.

This picture shows how a group 27 battery will fit on the shelf. There is still plenty of room for a battery box. Make sure when you are creating the shelf to make it low enough in the locker to allow the battery box lid to fit. I will be using kayak straps (used to hold canoes and kayaks on a roof rack) to hold my batteries in. I find they hold better and are easy to adjust. They usually come in 6 foot lengths but you can just cut and melt the ends to your size. I have purchased them at either REI or L.L. Bean.
Good Luck!
