Igloo Piezoelectric Cooler

posted 10-07-2008 by Tom Speitel

The cooler fits almost perfectly. It slightly wedges itself under the deck. The electrical panel is still reachable, but requires lighting to figure out what is what. I added a 12 volt accessory plug outlet near the electrical panel and above the 110 volt outlet to handle the coolers 12 volt plug. In port the cooler runs on 110 volts.

It works fine for short trips keeping drinks and food cold. I probably will leave the cooler behind for long trips and use the ice reefer below.

Small cleats were added below the reefer hatch for securing line. Fasteners were also screwed into the Igloo cooler top and side so the line does not slip forward or back.

Lower Fastenings

Two lines were attached to the block track through bolts. Washers were added to the bolts so the line cannot slip down.
This setup is certainly not as good as a real refigerator with freezer. But it has some advantages.

Advantages are
1) the empty cooler is soft and light,
2) it works 12 volt and 110 volt,
3) the cooler cost only $117 at K-Mart,
4) easily removeable, 5) doesnt require boat refit, and
6) you always have a cool one (around 2 cubic feet worth) ready at the dock.

Disadvantages are
1) piezoelectric, so will only cool 40 degrees F below cabin temperature,
2) no ice maker, and
3) is on all the time--no thermostat--costs about $9/month to run.
