Review of the Catalina 30 by m kazan

Year built 1988
Location of boat Greenport NY
The boat is sailed on Bays, sounds, or protected salt water
How the boat is used Weekends and longer
Normal wind strength 10-15 knots
Average size of crew 2-4
Liveaboard? No
Owner bought the boat in 2002
If the clock could be turned back, would owner buy again? Yes. The boat sails very well. Is easily handled under sail and power. Has been extremely reliable.
Gear that's been added After purchasing the boat in 2002 I purchased a new semi battened mail. 140 jib and dodger. This year I purchased and installed a new VHF with a ram mike and upgraded running rigging.
Structural or complex improvements None
The boat's best features The boat is very stable and tracks nicely in a stiff breeze. At 20-25knots up wind with one reef and a little off the jib the boat really flies. I have no qualms about sailing in Block Island Sound or going out on really nasty day because of the solidity of the boat.
Problem areas in terms of design, materials, maintenance, etc. A problem is that for all the apparent interior volume it actually has very little storage space. My previous c27 had more locker space. on the 30 there is a lot of Water tankage.. Id rather have lockers for food and gear.
Sailing characterisitcs Sail long Island sound, garniners bay , block island sound. The boat is very well behaved under all conditions
Motoring characterisitcs Universal 25 is an excellent engie. I have a 2 blade prop....a three might v give me better speed unde power.
Liveability Pretty good for 2
The owner's experience in dealing with Hunter (if any) Catalina has always been very helpful.
The owner's experience with the boat dealer or broker, if any I bought the boat directly from the cseller although I did speak with a number of very helpful brokers.
Other comments I have had a 22,27 and now a 30. No more need be said
